ProFile: File → Import is greyed out on a T1

It is greyed out because ProFile has no spreadsheet import for a T1, and there is no second way in. Attach Tape looks like one - the cell turns green and the status bar says Modified - and the field still reads 0.00. Typing into the box is the only thing that posts, and two ProFile habits decide whether it lands.

Re-tested in ProFile, 2026-09-11 · Updated September 11, 2026

It is genuinely disabled, and not because of anything you did

On an open T1 in ProFile, File → Import is greyed out. It is not a licence level, a permission, a read-only file or a setting you have missed. ProFile simply has no spreadsheet import for a personal return, so there is nothing behind the menu item to enable.

This surprises people who have used TaxCycle, which does take a spreadsheet, or who have read about importing into one of Intuit’s other products. It is worth knowing early, because the time normally lost here is spent hunting for the switch rather than looking for the other way in.

The things that are not the answer either

Attach Tape looks like the way round it, and is not

ProFile has an adding-machine tape you can attach to a field. It is the obvious answer, it is what we reached for first, and on a T1 it does not post.

Measured every way there is on an open 2025 return: the tape opens, the rows accept a description and an amount, Tab commits a row, Ok attaches the tape — the cell turns green and ProFile’s own status bar says Modified — and the field still reads 0.00. With Ok, with Enter, with =, without, and typed by hand rather than driven.

Every signal says it worked. That is what makes this worth an afternoon of somebody’s time: a green cell and a Modified status are exactly what a person checks before moving to the next field, and the number underneath is zero.

We published the opposite of this on 10 September and corrected it on the 11th. The tape is useful for showing your working on a field that already has a figure in it; it is not a way of getting a figure in.

What does work: type into the field

Unsatisfying, and it is the answer. There is no bulk path into a ProFile T1 — no spreadsheet, no tape, nothing that takes a list. What there is, is a field and a keyboard.

Two ProFile habits decide whether it lands, and both are easy to get wrong:

  1. Select what is already in the box first. Clicking a cell leaves a caret, not a selection, so typing appends your digits to the figure that was there — and ProFile rejects the resulting nonsense and silently restores the old number. Home, then Shift+End. Ctrl+A does nothing in this control.
  2. Commit with Tab. A figure typed and left sitting is not entered. Tab moves on and posts it.

Make sure you are in the field you think you are in

Right-click a field and choose Copy field code and ProFile tells you its own name for that box — {T4Table[0,1]} is T4 Box 14 on a 2025 T1. Worth doing whenever you have navigated by keyboard, because the codes are a table name with row and column indices and neighbouring boxes differ by one digit.

Do not reason your way to an index. A wrong one is still a valid cell, so the figure lands quietly in the wrong box on the right form.

Two things not to do

If you are doing this for a whole return

Then you are typing, field by field, with the paperwork beside you. That is the honest position: ProFile has no import for a T1 and no substitute for one. The realistic options are to type it, or to have something else read the paperwork and do the typing.

What we do about it

KeyGlance reads a client’s dropoff — the receipts, slips and statements, as they arrive — and enters the figures into ProFile on your own Windows machine, asking ProFile for each field's own code and reading the value back afterwards. Every value stays linked to the spot on the page it was read from, so you check it against the document instead of retyping it. It never files anything with the CRA.

Questions we get asked about this

Why is File > Import greyed out in ProFile?

Because ProFile has no spreadsheet import for a T1, so there is nothing behind the menu item to enable. It is not a licence level, a permission, a read-only file or a setting. Confirmed on a live ProFile T1 on 9 September 2026.

Can I import an Excel file into a ProFile T1?

No. There is no supported path that takes a spreadsheet of your own figures into a ProFile T1, and no second way in either. Auto-fill My Return brings down CRA slips, Import RQ handles Quebec relevés, and neither takes a file you built. Typing into the field is the only thing that posts.

What is Attach Tape in ProFile?

An adding-machine tape you can attach to a field to show the working behind a figure. On a T1 it does not POST: the tape attaches, the cell turns green, ProFile says Modified, and the field still reads 0.00. Measured with Ok, with Enter, with =, and typed by hand. It is not a way of getting a figure into a field.

Does typing into a ProFile field override it?

On a calculated field, typing sets one, and that is the reason not to. An overridden field stops following the return, so a later change upstream leaves it sitting at the old figure with nothing about it looking wrong. Attach tapes to fields you would otherwise be typing into.
